From our President
Gary Davies
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new members to our club. I would also like to encourage our new members to become active in the club. We are always looking for new ideas and new places to visit. I encourage you to come along on our field trips when possible. We are a club made up of both professional and amateur collectors. Our field trip leaders Elvie and Milton have been members of the club for many years and have a vast knowledge on fossils and fossil sites. Many other members also have a broad knowledge on fossils. Anyway there is always someone on field trips to help you identify your finds.
Hoping to see many of you on our next field trip.
From the Editor's Desk
Michael Elegy
G'day
First of all I would like to introduce myself, my name is Michael and I have been a member since July ‘09’ of our great club. In this time I have been to all of the clubs meetings and field trips and the majority of the social events.
I would like to give a little introduction in to how I have been associated with fossils, occasionally while growing up and more extensively since I have joined the club. My first relic from Australia’s ancient past was probably around when I was in ‘Cubs’ and went to the Australian Museum for an excursion and pick up a pamphlet to join the Museums Dinosaur Club. On taking it home my parents told me that I had to fund the club membership myself which lead me to writing to the museum (without letting my parents knowing) and asking directly for some dinosaur fossils as I could not afford to be a member of their club. Low and behold a few weeks later a letter from a palaeontologist from the museum had sent me out a plaster mould of a dinosaur bone.
My next fossil encounter was quite sometime later when I was on a high school camp down at Jervis Bay on the South Coast of NSW where I found a large portion (around 40cm x 12cm) of fossilised wood cambium which ended up being the centre piece of my brother’s fish tank.

Petrified Wood and Bark from the Cobar Mines
My next encounter was a piece of petrified wood from the Early Devonian Rock formation of the Cobar Supergroup that was given to me by my brother who was working at the time in the mines out near Cobar.
Then back in 09 I was doing a University assignment and got distracted and started looking up extinct plants of Australia (as my passion and trade is focused around plants) and one site led to another which lead to another and after reading websites well into the early hours of the morning I stumbled onto the FOSSIL CLUB OF NSW INC. website. I immediately printed and filled out the membership application form and sent it in the next day. Now my fossil collection is growing at an ever exciting rate thanks to the fantastic field trips organised by Milton and Elvie and fossils that we have for sale at some of our meetings.
Well I hope you have gotten an idea of my background into the world of fossils and just to let you know that I still have the Devonian piece and it weighs a tonne.
Within this issue there are so many great articles to read and indulge in some light hearted humour from our bumbling Professor Guy comic strip that has been purposely designed and donated to us from the boys at Siberian productions. Well I hope you all have as much fun reading this issue of the ‘Fossil News’ as I did compiling it.
Remember that ‘The Club’ is always after fresh and new material to place in the publication; these can be your own written articles from your knowledge and experience, articles in newspaper, internet, on the radio or TV, scientific journals & etc.
If you do wish to have your article in the magazine just email it to me at the following address:
If the articles are your own work I would really appreciate a written consent stating that the club can publish it.
Cheers
Until next time fossil on!
